October Tarot Musings
As the month of October breezed in, we may have noticed ourselves feeling social, friendly and light, or perhaps focusing on thoughts of love relationships, or any type of one-on-one partnership. The desire for harmony and equality felt very important. October begins in Libra and Libra wants things fair and just. We want to go out for a lovely dinner. Beauty holds our attention; summer’s last yellow butterflies fluttering around blooming roses, or the scalloped pattern of the scattered clouds, that melodious ballad cooing on the radio. We might feel like changing our hairstyle, or decide to wear that china red lipstick to our yoga class we usually reserve for a night out. Simultaneously, whatever feels out of balance in our lives announces itself through circumstances, tapping on our shoulder without relief, until we can no longer deny it. We need balance.
As the days of October march forward, they intensify, like pounding heart beats, so that when the end of the month nears, we may feel as if suddenly we woke up in a serious mood, brooding and internal, our feelings consumed in the depths of beginnings and endings. Sometimes external circumstances dramatically force us to pay attention to what MUST be let go, and sometimes internal things like an ongoing fear or health issues grab your attention. October commences in Libra then moves into the beginning time of Scorpio — it is my feeling that the early days of scorpio often show us what we have absolutely outgrown and what needs to be transformed.
What do you need to let go of?
Kiss It Goodbye
Letting go of what no longer serves is not an easy process (or we would have done it already) and therefore is left to the hard-scrabble core strength and tenacity of the Scorpio days, when things become black and white, direct, obvious and dire. Scorpio will take no BS, especially from your own self, so it is a time of becoming painfully honest and beginning that Death process we call letting go. It may hurt, you may feel like grief grabbed your heart in its fist, you may feel dropped in a well of emotion or sudden abandonment, but surrender you must what no longer serves. Scorpio will have it no other way, it must live in its truth and the regenerative powers are on your side. The loss is paving the way for victories to come. Whether it is an actual relationship, friendship, a form of income, an emotional pattern, a habitual way of reacting, an unhealthy habit, a toxic person, an obsession-compulsion, Let-It-Go.
You will feel passionately determined and motivated for that new beginning that will arise on the empty soil ~~ that clear foundation of what you have demolished.

The Death Card - Tarot
One of the most powerful cards in the Tarot is the Death card, summoning and exposing our greatest fears as we step out into the complete Unknown. It is a card of profound transformation, change, elimination and rebirth. It is the end of an era, and can be no other way, no matter how much you force and fight, eventual surrender is necessary. The death card is represented by the astrological sign Scorpio and therefore it is the Tarot Card and theme for October. Halloween synchronistically punctuates with an exclamation point the end of October, as we honor the dead and departed, the saints, martyrs, and ghosts.
We must die to give form to the new and therefore most humans recoil from this intense process of reconstruction. Not many go willingly into dismantling. I see clients shudder consistently when this card appears in a reading, until they learn that it heralds a bright new beginning, but only after the courageous steps have been taken. You cannot get to the light on the other side of the tunnel, without going through that dark tunnel. So the death card is that dreaded walk through that treacherous tunnel, and along that inescapable path, you drop the unnecessary bags that burden your journey. You lighten the load. You begin to feel free.
Life is a continual process of death and rebirth, of change and evolution. When this card comes up, I am so happy for that person! And yet I have enormous compassion, as I understand they have been going through a time of self-exploration, confronting inescapable sweeping change. I honor them for their courage. And I try to remind them that a fresh start awaits. A new beginning to create whatever they want.
* How do you feel about the letting go process?
* What have you let go of that opened up a new beginning?
* Where has courage grown in you because of walking yourself through that process time and again?
* How can you be more loving to yourself while surrendering to change?
Take ten minutes to meditate, close your eyes and breathe slowly. Begin to feel your thoughts slow, and your body relax. What is culled from deep inside? Take a piece of paper and write for five minutes straight without censoring yourself - let the pen move across the page without reading what you write.
How is your inner voice speaking to you? Is it through sensations in your body or is it speaking to you in words as thoughts? What must be surrendered? Begin today, one step in that direction. Then take one step each day for the rest of October.

Oh where is Cupid’s arrow in these darker days of winter? The arrow (eros) carries the excitement that only love can bring. Winter days disappear into cold too soon, and we are left seeking joy and warmth, to love and be loved. Enter Valentine’s Day, the perfect antidote to the winter dull drums. After the light of the Holiday season, winter begins in earnest, serious, sober. We huddle inwards in the cold. We get back to work, we stay structured. But deep within our hearts it is always summer, lush and hot, passions waiting to be expressed. And yet, it is always cool too, the moon shining its brightness in the cosmic darkness of the ebony sky.
Oh the moods, the yin and yang. We are both hot and cold. Lovers and foes. And here Valentine’s Day rushes in every February 14th, in the midst of our winter, with its high demands through media and society of expressions of love, and good old fashioned courtship.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, it is a good time to reflect more deeply at the cosmic energies at this time. Tradition demands its conventional gestures of desire with chocolates and flowers, but these times have been demanding something different from all of us, shocking and sometimes brutal news getting our attention through extreme events all around our world, forcing us out of our collective slumber, to seek Truth.
Valentine's Day Astrological Perspective
The astrology of late has been extremely pointed at transforming us all through upheaval, chaos, breakdowns and breakthroughs. Truths are cracking through old staid systems like the roots of a tree breaking up a cement sidewalk.…though usually the roots slowly unfurl and the cement moves out if its way naturally over time, this has been ultra fast speed, violent at times, full of rage, questions of justice, and much anguish. And there is still more to be seen of this energy meant to carry us all into a new direction, both personally to live more truthful and soulful lives, and collectively as fair and just societies, and ultimately to honor our sacred Mother Earth.
December 2014- March 20, 2015 The last month of 2014, and the first few months of 2015 are still carrying this energy of the Uranus/Pluto square which has been in effect since April 2012. These two powerhouse planets have been wrestling, or better said, warring in conflict for two and a half years, accelerating changes in profound and transformative ways.
Pluto goes deep, it guts you like a house that needs to be rebuilt, it leaves no prisoners, unearths all lies and truths, and ultimately seeks transformation through death and rebirth. Pluto is in harsh aspect to Uranus, the planet of change, sudden flashes of brilliance, of shocks and rebellion, of innovation, humanitarianism, unpredictability. Uranus is future-focused, it wants to shake you out of ruts, even if it light abruptly shocks you, as it rules electricity and all technology. These two planets have been pitted against each other, I like to believe, to transmute and alter us into a higher vibration. We are in a collective metamorphosis from the cocoons we have been isolated or incubated in and the pain of birthing is what many of us have been experiencing.
Tarot Cards For Valentine’s Day
The two cards I pulled are the Three of Cups and the Ace of Swords. I feel these are perfect for our upcoming Valentine’s Day especially in light of our world’s and cosmic occurrences.
Three of Cups - Exuberance, Community, love, abundance, friendship, celebration, uniting with others in a joyful way or to create support like a family, overflowing with good vibes, the joys of dancing with those that you care about. This card can have a feminine feel to it, it depicts three goddesses dancing on the Tarot card, but can be that the feeling in itself, as cups relate to feelings, emotions, relationships, creativity and love; and the three brings it in a trinity, so that it is even more than romantic love between two people, it includes community and society.
Ace of Swords - is about Truth, Justice, using mental force, facing problems, doing what is right, fighting for a cause, cutting through confusion, being honest, singing out what is real, finding strength to overcome. Aces are new energy, new beginnings in a very pure and strong way! And Swords is the suit of communication, thinking, perceptions and perspective, vision, justice, honor and truth.
I see these two cards together as integrating love for one, as love for community as a whole, and a way to communicate more honestly and clearly, with love. This looks to be a beautiful and unique Valentine’s day where you can love and cherish your partner, with the gift of being truthful and honest and fair with them, and to celebrate joyfully, in high spirits, together and spread that joy to the community around you.
Valentine's Day has created its own counter culture of rebellion against the Hallmark commerciality. I know many couples and singles who refuse to partake in the conventional aspect of the day. But I personally ask, how bad can it be to celebrate romance, appreciation and love? Obviously one 24-hour period is not nearly enough, as love is rich, expressed and felt in our actions and efforts over time, is filled with lessons and truly is unfathomable. However in all my tarot Readings, Reiki sessions, and Astrology readings, and in my long years of Yoga practice, I have found over and over the one thing that strengthens love as a daily practice is gratitude. Being grateful for all the blessings in your life, for all that you have, and for those you love and cherish, is a way to expand your Love exponentially.
A LOVE EXERCISE
With your journal and pen, or with your eyes closed right before sleeping, or right when you wake up, take five minutes to really focus on all you are grateful for. It is as simple as beginning with - “I am grateful for….” (the clothes in my closet, the roof over my head, my fingers and toes, my eyesight, the food in my fridge, my best friends support, my child’s laughter, my partner's pancakes and hugs, that I wake up in a peaceful country without war, my health, for legs strong enough to go on a hike, that I am blessed enough to have a car that gets stuck in traffic, that I have a job, that I have drawing ability, that I can breathe, that I am alive, that I came from parents). You get the picture. Dip your toes in the gratitude pool, and I can assure you, your love will grow exponentially.
